Media Release - Department of Water and Energy Date: 7 May 2009 BLUE GREEN ALGAE LEVELS DECLINE AT LAKE CARGELLIGO, CURLEW WATERS, LAKE FORBES, WYANGALA DAM, BOOLIGAL AND BURRENDONG DAM
The Central West Regional Algal Coordinating Committee has today announced that the previously issued Red Level Warning (high alert) for blue-green algae at Lake Cargelligo, Curlew Waters, Lake Forbes, Wyangala Dam, Booligal and Burrendong Dam have been downgraded.
Monitoring conducted by the Department of Water and Energy and State Water Corporation has shown that concentrations of blue green algae have declined prompting the lifting of the Red Alert.
Currently, Lake Cargelligo, Curlew Waters, and Lake Forbes are on Amber Level Warning (medium alert), while Lake Wyangala and Booligal have declined to Green Level Warning (low alert).
Burrendong Dam has declined to no alert levels.
When an Amber Level Warning is in place, the water source is safe for fishing and water sports although people are advised not to drink treated or boiled water due to the risk of stomach upsets. Boiling the water does not inactive algal toxins.
People should use personal discretion at all times before entering a water body and be aware that algal blooms can develop in a 24 hour period.
The Department of Water and Energy and State Water Corporation will continue routine water quality monitoring and advise any change as new results are received.
Information updates about blue-green algae blooms and Red Level Warning areas can be obtained from the Regional Algal Coordinating Committee freecall Algal Information Hotline on 1800 999 457.
