How can I contribute to SALIS?
The DNR SALIS team welcomes contributions from earth scientists in other organisations and the community. As a contributor to SALIS you will not only have access to existing information, but a safe and secure repository for your own information.
Each new contributor is given a set of Soil Data Cards. These provide a rapid, comprehensive, systematic and standardised method of recording soil profile and site information. Because they are scannable, they also make entry of the information into the SALIS database quick and easy. They come in a number of formats, including a comprehensive eight-page booklet, a condensed four-page version, and a compact two-page card for more general soil observations. DNR can also provide specialised cards for particular survey purposes, such as salinity surveys.
New contributors also receive a copy of the Soil Data Entry Handbook, which will help them to use the Soil Data Cards. As you send in completed cards, we'll store your information for future use and supply you with a range of outputs plus replacement cards.
The Soil Data Entry Handbook, and its supplements, are available online in PDF format. See 'SALIS documentation' on the About SALIS page.
To select and obtain the type of cards that you will need see the Order data cards page. Cards are supplied free of charge.
Can I keep my data private?
Yes. Information in SALIS is divided into three types.
Internal. All information loaded into SALIS is initially considered to be 'internal'. This is data that is still being edited or refined by the owner, and may include work-in-progress or sensitive work for a particular client. Only you (the data owner) and the SALIS database administrators can access or edit this data. All 'internal' data is made 'public' after 3 months unless the owner indicates otherwise.
Public data. This is data that is fully accessible to all SALIS users for querying or reporting, but it cannot be changed, deleted or modified. If changes are necessary, the information becomes 'internal' until the changes are completed, and then it reverts to 'public' status.
Confidential data. This is data that has been completed by the owner. However, for reasons of confidentiality or commercial privilege the owner has decided that the data is never to be released into the public domain. This data is kept securely, with access restricted to the owner and database administrators.
SALIS training
The Department of Natural Resources conducts training courses in the use of both SALIS and the Soil Data Cards. The SALIS team can provide more information.
